Before Canada: Northern North America in a Connected World

We’d like to extend our congratulations to Sam Derksen, historian here at Know History, for his chapter co-authored with Allan Greer titled “Debt, Liquor, and Violence in the Fur Trade” in the new release, Before Canada: Northern North America in a Connected World.

The collection explores the deep history of the land that became Canada, examining the vast networks and trade routes Indigenous peoples and European colonists built in the north. The topics in the collection range from the cod fisheries in Newfoundland, to Dene ancestors trekking from the Northwest Territories to Arizona, to the Inuit migration from Siberia to Labrador.
