A Story of People, Power, and a Region United,
Columbia Basin Trust

This commemorative book tells the story of how the strong and determined people in the Columbia Basin regained control after dams changed their homes and landscapes.

Fifty years ago, the construction of the Columbia River Treaty dams reshaped the lives and surroundings of Columbia Basin residents, leaving a lasting impact on their homes and communities. Rather than accept the many challenges these dams created, residents formed the Columbia Basin Trust in 1995 to benefit the affected communities. Not only would the Trust transform the legacy of hydropower in the region, but it would also create a legacy of social, economic, and environmental well-being for future generations.

Know History partnered with Columbia Basin Trust to tell this story in a commemorative book. We interviewed the Trust’s founders and visionaries and explored its archive—and others—to understand the Trust’s history and growth and to craft a compelling narrative of its first 25 years. This narrative is accompanied by archival images and custom photography and illustrations that bring the Trust’s legacy to life.

The book was produced in print, digital, and audio formats. You can explore the digital version at https://25years.ourtrust.org/.

The book is dedicated to the staff and the wonderful visionaries of the Columbia Basin. Know History is proud to have collaborated on a project commemorating years of hard work and innovation with stunning visuals and photographs.
